Stop Play.Slow-Motion Record no indication > O Reverse Freeze-Frame Rewind Video Search Frame Advance << >.<< > || Forward Recording Fast-Forward Video Search Pause >> >.>> O || VHS INDEX SEARCH SYSTEM When you start a recording, your VCR automatically marks the tape with an index signal and Id flashes on the VCR's display. You can quickly locate a specific recording on the tape by using index scan or index search. The VCR can search for up to 99 index signals. We recommend that you list the index numbers for the recordings on the VHS cassette box. Index Scan The index scan feature plays back the first 5 seconds of a recording so that you can see if it is the recording you want to watch. Follow these steps to use index scan. 1. While in the stop or play mode press INDEX/GO-TO on the remote control. 2. Press Fast-F >> to search forward, or press << REWIND to search backward. Id SCAN appears on the VCR's display. When the VCR locates an index signal, the first 5 seconds of the recording plays. After a 5-second segment plays, the tape advances or rewinds to the next index signal. 3. Press PLAY or STOP to stop index scan. NOTE: If the tape reaches the end during the forward search of index scan, the VCR stops and the tape automatically rewinds. Index Search The index search function advances or rewinds a tape directly to the beginning of a desired recording by locating the recording's index signal. If there are several recordings on a tape, index search skips the undesired recordings to locate the desired recording. Follow these steps to use index search. 1. Count the number of recordings you want to skip. If you want to search forward, count the next recording as the first recording you skip. If you search backward, count the current recording as the first recording you skip. 2. While in the stop or play mode press INDEX/GO-TO on the remote control. 3. Enter the number of recordings you want to skip, using the remote control's number buttons. 4. Press FAST-F >> or << REWIND. When the VCR detects an index signal, the counter display reduces by one. When the counter reaches the number of recordings you specified to skip, the search stops and playback automatically starts. VARIABLE SPEED SLOW-MOTION For programs recorded at the SP or EP speed, press SLOW on the remote control to reduce the playback speed to 1/10 of its normal speed. The VCR mutes the sound during slow-motion. After you press SLOW, press \/ or /\ to vary the slow-motion speed from 1/5 to 1/30 of the normal playback speed. Press PLAY to return to normal playback. NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the slow-motion mode for 5 minutes, the VCR automatically stops. If the slow-motion picture is poor, adjust the tracking control. See "Tracking Control", below. To reduce or eliminate jitter in slow-motion pictures, adjust the corresponding VERT SYNC ADJ control on the back panel. FREEZE-FRAME Freeze-frame lets you stop the tape and view a single frame. Press PAUSE/STILL during playback to freeze the picture. Press PLAY to return to normal playback. During freeze-frame, the picture is lower quality than during normal playback. However, the picture is best with recordings made at the SP or EP speed. NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the freeze-frame mode for 5 minutes the VCR automatically stops. If a horizontal bar appears during freeze-frame adjust the tracking in the slow-motion mode. If the picture jitters during freeze-frame of an SP or EP recording adjust the corresponding VERT SYNC ADJ control on the back panel. FRAME ADVANCE During the freeze-frame mode, you can advance the picture one frame at a time by pressing PAUSE/STILL. This feature works best with video cassettes recorded at the SP or EP speed. RECORD PAUSE Use PAUSE/STILL during recording to edit unwanted material, such as commercials. Press PAUSE/STILL at the beginning of the unwanted material. The tape temporarily stops. Press PAUSE/STILL again or RECORD to resume recording. Using PAUSE/STILL makes a smooth, almost unnoticeable edit. Using STOP for editing can produce a glitch at the edit point. NOTE: If you leave the VCR in the pause mode for 5 minutes during recording, the VCR automatically stops. AUTO TRACKING CONTROL Press AUTO TRACKING on the remote control during playback for an automatic tracking adjustment. If you need to make further adjustments, see "Manual Tracking Control", below. MANUAL TRACKING CONTROL If the VCR's picture is poor, press and hold down TRACKING \/ or /\ as needed, to adjust the picture during tape playback. The tracking position indicators appear on the display. About 3 seconds after you release the button, the tracking position indicators disappear and the clock display reappears. NOTES: If the sound of a recording made on another VHS hi-fi VCR is poor, you might improve the sound by adjusting the tracking control If tracking is incorrect, the Hi-Fi indicator does not appear on the display. Press TRACKING \/ or /\. You might need to readjust the control for each tape you load. REAL-TIME COUNTER WITH MEMORY Your VCR's counter shows the actual tape run time, not a reference tape count. Use the counter and memory functions to mark and return to specific locations on a tape. When you load a cassette, the counter resets to 0h 00m 00s on the display. As the tape plays, the counter displays the run time. If you rewind the tape past the zero point, the display shows the time with a minus (-) sign. 1. Press RESET on the remote control at the location you want to return to. The counter displays 0h 00m 00s. 2. When you want to return to the selected location, press MEMORY so that M appears on the display. Then, continue recording or playback. Press STOP, and then press << REWIND or FAST-F >>. The tape rewinds or fast forwards and automatically stops at 0h 00m 00s on the display. NOTE: The counter uses special signals on a recorded tape. Thus the counter does not work with blank tape or blank portions of a partially recorded tape. FAST-FORWARD/REWIND AND VISUAL SEARCH When the VCR is in the stop mode, press FAST-F >> or << REWIND to quickly fast-forward or rewind the tape. Use the counter to locate a specific section of tape. When the counter shows the approximate section of tape, press FAST-F >> or << REWIND again for visual search. The VCR plays the tape at a fast playback speed so that you can find the exact location on tape that you want to view. Repeat pressing FAST-F >> or << REWIND to alternate between fast-forward/ rewind and visual search. You can also press FAST-F >> or << REWIND during playback for visual search. Press PLAY for normal playback. NOTES: VCR must appear on the VCR's display for visual search. During visual search, the VCR mutes the sound and the picture is lower in quality than during normal playback. However, the search picture is best with tapes recorded at the SP or EP speed. TV MONITOR FUNCTION The TV monitor function lets you view a TV program during playback. During playback, press and hold down MONITOR on the remote control. (Be sure INPUT is set to the tuner mode.) The TV program on the channel selected by the VCR tuner appears on the TV screen as long as you hold down MONITOR. NOTE: If INPUT is set to A/V mode, the signals from the VIDEO/AUDIO INPUT jacks appear on the TV screen. BLUE-SCREEN DISPLAY If no video signal is present, the blue-Screen display appears on the TV's screen. You cannot record the blue screen. FAST-RESPONSE SYSTEM When you load a video cassette tape with its erase-protection tab intact, the VCR positions the tape next to the record/playback head for about 5 minutes. Within this period, you can start playback, recording, or any other tape motion the moment you press the appropriate button. This is useful any time you need a precise start for playback or recording. When you stop a tape during playback, recording, rewind, or fast-forward, the tape remains positioned next to the record/playback head for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the fast response system releases to protect the tape. AUTOMATIC PLAYBACK AND REWIND When you load a cassette with the erase-protection tab removed, playback begins automatically. When the tape reaches the end during manual recording, playback, or fast forward, the VCR automatically rewinds to the beginning of the tape. If the erase-protection tab has been removed, the cassette ejects. If the memory function is activated, the tape stops at 0h 00m 00s on the display but does not eject. GO-TO PLAYBACK The go-to playback function lets you rewind or fast-forward a tape to a specific point on the tape and automatically play back the tape from that point. Follow these steps to use go-to playback. 1. During the stop or play mode, press INDEX/GO-TO on the remote control twice, TO appears on the VCR's display. 2. Use the remote control's number buttons to enter the length of playback time you want to skip or rewind. For example: To skip or rewind ten minutes of playback time, press 0 1 0. 3. Press FAST-F >> to skip the next 10 minutes of playback time, or press << REWIND to play back the previous 10 minutes. Playback automatically begins when the tape rewinds or fast-forwards to the selected point on the tape. BLANK SEARCH SYSTEM If you want to locate the end of a recorded section of a partially recorded tape, press BLANK SEARCH on the remote control in the stop mode. To End appears on the VCR's display and the tape advances rapidly and automatically stops when it senses a blank section of tape (no recorded signal). If there are no blank sections on the tape, after searching to the end of the tape, the VCR rewinds the tape to the beginning (or to 0h 00m 00s if you activated the memory function). Then, the VCR stops. DEW PROTECTION SYSTEM Condensation inside the VCR can cause tape jams or video head damage. Your VCR's dew protection system helps avoid such damage by preventing VCR operation when the system senses excess moisture. (SYMBOL) appears on the VCR's display when the dew protection system is active. You can resume normal operation only after the condensation is evaporated and (SYMBOL) disappears from the display.
