USING CLOSED CAPTIONS Closed captioning displays the audio portion of a television program as written words that appear on the television screen (in a form similar to English subtitles). Closed captions allow viewers to read the dialogue and narration of television programs. Caption signals are transmitted as part of the TV broadcast and then decoded by the TV to display as words. Caption Tips Sometimes TV stations broadcast two different caption signals on the same channel. By selecting MODE 1 or MODE 2 under MODE SELECTION, you can choose which signal to view. MODE 1 is usually the signal with the captions, while MODE 2 might show demonstration or programming information. Not all TV broadcasts include closed caption signals. Check your local programming guide. Your TV might not properly receive caption signals in the following situations. Ignition: Black spots or horizontal streaks appear; picture flutters or drifts. Usually caused by interference from an automobile ignition system, neon lamps, drills, or other electrical appliances. Ghosts: Double images appear. Ghosts are caused by the television signal following two paths: the direct path and another reflected from a building hill, or other object. Changing the direction or position of the antenna might improve the reception. Snow: Small dots in the picture. If your TV is located at the fringe area of a television broadcast, where the signal is weak, you might need to install a special antenna to improve the picture. You are using an old, bad, or illegally recorded tape in the VCR connected to the TV. An airplane or car is interfering with the TV signal. The signal from the antenna is weak. The program wasn't captioned when it was produced, transmitted, or taped. If you connect a VCR that has a captioning function, note the following. For the best reception of caption signals, connect a signal distributor. Select the caption function for either the TV or the VCR, but not both. If both are decoding caption signals, captions might overlap or reception might be poor. Selecting the Caption Function 1. Press CAPTION on the remote control or FUNCTION on the front panel so DECODER appears. Then press VOL + or - so the arrow points to ON. 2. Press CAPTION or FUNCTION so DECODER MODE appears. Then press VOL + or - so the arrow points to CAPTION. 3. Press CAPTION or FUNCTION until MODE SELECTION appears. Press VOL + or - so the arrow points to MODE 1 or MODE 2. 4. To turn off captions, press CAPTION or FUNCTION or FUNCTION so DECODER, appears, then press VOL + or - so the arrow points to OFF. NOTE: If you select captioning and then turn off the TV, captioning is still active when you turn on the TV again. USING THE TEXT FUNCTION Text is information presented in a black box on the television screen as a service to viewers. Some examples of text broadcasts are captioned program lists, weather forecasts, stock exchange reports, and wire-service news. Some television stations provide two different text services. You can choose between the two text signals by selecting MODE 1 or MODE 2 under MODE SELECTION. NOTE: Not all television stations provide text services. Selecting Text 1. Press CAPTION on the remote control or FUNCTION on the front panel to display DECODER. Then press VOL + or - so the arrow points to ON. 2. Press CAPTION or FUNCTION so the display shows DECODER MODE. Then press VOL + or - so the arrow points to TEXT. 3. Press CAPTION or FUNCTION so the display shows MODE SELECTION and press VOL + or - so the arrow points to MODE 1 or MODE 2. 4. To turn off the text function, press CAPTION or FUNCTION so DECODER appears, then press VOL + or - so the arrow points to OFF. NOTE: If the signal for the text program is weak, the black box might appear and disappear on the screen. This problem goes away when reception improves. (LB/EB 08/12/96)
